BC Clipboard OCR tool — Confidential mode

OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is a technology that converts images containing text into plain text you can copy and paste anywhere. Instead of retyping content manually, you simply capture or paste an image and the tool extracts all readable text automatically — saving time and eliminating transcription errors. In Confidential mode, this entire process runs inside your browser: your image never leaves your device or gets sent to any external server.

Confidential mode provides an automatic mode and four extraction modes, each using a different internal document analysis strategy. None of them send any data externally — all processing remains local:

Mode Best for Document types
C0 (default) When unsure which mode to use Runs C1–C4 one after another, keeps the most reliable result, improves doubtful words with the other readings and tells you which mode won. Slower.
C1 Standard documents and labels Product labels, receipts with clear text, screenshots, scanned documents, images with uniform layout.
C2 Complex images Mixed layouts, multi-column pages, menus, documents with images and text combined.
C3 Single-column text Narrow labels, receipts, business cards, vertical text strips, forms with one text column.
C4 Sparse or scattered text Signs, posters, images where text is spread across the page without clear structure.

Uses of BC Clipboard OCR tool

Any time you need the text from an image — whether it came to you as a photo, a screenshot, a document scan, or something you spotted on a wall — BC Clipboard OCR converts it into plain text you can copy, paste and use anywhere in seconds. Here are some of the most common real-world situations where it saves time.

🔧 Image configuration

Use these tools after loading an image to improve extraction quality before running the OCR.

A

Text orientation

Rotate the wheel to match the direction your text is pointing. The letter A shows the current orientation. Available once an image is loaded.

⬚

Focus area

Draw a rectangle over the text area you want to extract. The rest of the image will be ignored, improving accuracy when only part of the image contains relevant text.

How we protect your confidentiality

Confidential mode isn't a single feature — it's a combination of choices at three different levels: what happens in your browser, what happens with your clipboard, and what this page itself does or doesn't load. Here's each one, explained plainly.

🌐 Your browser

Text extraction runs entirely inside your browser using Tesseract.js, an open-source OCR engine that executes as JavaScript on your own device. Your image is decoded, analysed and read pixel by pixel locally — it is never uploaded, streamed or transmitted anywhere, and there's no AI fallback in this mode that would send it to Anthropic's API. If you switch your device to airplane mode after the page has loaded, extraction still works: that's the clearest proof that nothing leaves your machine.

📋 Your clipboard

Pasting an image or text uses the browser's standard Clipboard API, which only ever activates when you explicitly paste — with Ctrl+V, the paste button, or a right-click menu. Nothing is read from your clipboard automatically or in the background: browsers require that explicit action before a page can see its contents. Once pasted, the content lives only in the page's memory for that session; it isn't cached, synced to any account, or written to disk anywhere but your own device. Copying a result back out (Copy text) works the same way, in reverse — straight to your system clipboard, with no server in between.

🔍 This page, compared to a typical website

Most free web tools fund themselves with advertising and analytics — scripts that track visits, build a profile, and often run even on a page that promises to protect a specific piece of data. This page carries none of that: no Google AdSense, no analytics tag, no third-party tracking script of any kind, so there's nothing here collecting data about your visit either. Local storage in your browser is used only for your own preferences — language, theme, the last conversion factor you typed — and never leaves your device. One honest limit worth naming: this only covers what the page itself does. A browser extension, a company-managed device, or a shared computer can still observe what happens on screen, and that's outside any website's control.

Other tools

BC Clipboard OCR includes other specialised modes, also free:

BC Clipboard OCR — Perseus mode

BC Clipboard OCR Perseus is a streamlined version of the tool, designed for speed — now with the two conversions requested most often built right in: date and amount format, plus a dedicated table extraction mode. Load an image, extract the text or a table, and go. Ideal for mobile use, quick captures and on-the-fly extraction.

🧪 Milcheaufsnutgluten — Allergen & Intolerance Detector

Milcheaufsnutgluten is a specific tool for detecting allergens and intolerances on product labels. Photograph, paste or scan the barcode — extracts text with OCR and highlights each allergen in its colour. Ideal for people with food allergies, intolerances or dietary restrictions.

📐 Clipboard OCR Konvorcet — Distance, Area, Weight, Volume & Temperature Converter

Clipboard OCR Konvorcet is a specialised tool for converting distance, area, weight, volume and temperature values found in images — recipes, product labels, travel documents, shipping and customs forms, property listings. Extract the text with OCR and apply the conversion automatically, either replacing each value or adding the converted amount in brackets right next to it.

💱 Clipboard OCR Croesus Rates — Currency Converter

Clipboard OCR Croesus Rates is a specialised tool for converting currency values found in images — price tags, menus, receipts, invoices from abroad. Frequently Asked Questions

What is BC Clipboard OCR — Confidential mode?
BC Clipboard OCR — Confidential mode is a free tool that extracts and converts text from any image — screenshots, photos, scanned documents or clipboard content — processing everything locally on your device using Tesseract.js, an open-source OCR engine: nothing ever leaves your device. It includes search, date and amount format conversion, a conversion factor for currencies and units, all-caps conversion, and four extraction modes (C1–C4) optimised for different document types. It works on any device, can be installed as a Progressive Web App (PWA — download it directly to your phone, tablet or computer for quick access without opening a browser), and lets you share extracted text via your messaging app, Teams or email. If you need AI-enhanced extraction — in exchange for images being sent to the Anthropic API — use the standard tool at clipboardocr.com, which also includes Perseus mode (fast extraction with AI fallback, table mode and instant date/amount conversion), Milcheaufsnutgluten (allergen and intolerance identification), Konvorcet (distance, weight, volume and temperature conversion) and Croesus Rates (currency conversion).
How do I extract text from an image?
Load your image using one of four methods: click Upload file to select an image from your device, click Paste from clipboard (or press Ctrl+V) to paste a copied image, drag and drop an image file onto the panel, or tap Camera on mobile to capture text directly. Once the image is loaded, click Extract text & conversions and the extracted text will appear in the panel below.
Does BC Clipboard OCR Confidential mode store or send my images?
No — Confidential mode runs entirely on your device using Tesseract.js, a local OCR engine, so your images are never uploaded, transmitted or stored on any server. (The standard BC Clipboard OCR tool does use AI via the Anthropic API for higher accuracy — Confidential mode exists so you can avoid that for sensitive documents.)
What is the conversion factor and how does it work?
The conversion factor multiplies all numeric values found in the extracted text by a number you specify. For example, entering 1.18 will convert amounts from euros to dollars (at that rate). It works for any numeric conversion: currencies, weights (kg/lb 2.205), distances (km/mi 1.609) or any other unit. The value is saved automatically for your next session. Note that it does not connect to live exchange rate data — you enter the rate manually.
Can I search or convert the text again without extracting it a second time?
Yes. Once the text has been extracted, each option — date format, amount format, conversion factor, search and all caps — has its own "Convert" button (or, for Search and All caps, the option's own title doubles as the button) that applies just that action to the text already on screen, instantly and without running the extraction again. This lets you try different settings or combine several changes on the same result without waiting for a new scan each time.
Can I use BC Clipboard OCR on my phone?
Yes. BC Clipboard OCR is fully responsive and works on any mobile device. On mobile, a Camera button appears so you can capture text directly without saving the photo first. You can also download it as a Progressive Web App (PWA — download it directly to your phone, tablet or computer for quick access without opening a browser) — it will appear on your home screen and launch directly like a native app.
Is BC Clipboard OCR free?
Yes, BC Clipboard OCR is free to use. There are no registration requirements, no usage limits for normal use, and no hidden costs.
How does Search work?
Search lets you find one or more terms within the extracted text — type a single word, or several separated by commas (e.g. gluten, lactose, nuts) to search for multiple terms at once. Click Extract text & conversions, and each term is highlighted in a different colour; the status bar shows how many times each one appears.
What image formats are supported?
BC Clipboard OCR supports JPG, PNG and WEBP image formats. You can load images via file upload, clipboard paste, drag and drop, or directly from your device camera on mobile.
What is Confidential mode and how is it different?
Confidential mode processes your image entirely in the browser using an open-source OCR engine that runs locally on your device. No image data is sent to any external server or API. All conversion tools work exactly the same as in the standard version.
What are the extraction modes (C0–C4)?
The tool offers an automatic mode (C0) and four extraction modes, each optimised for a different type of document:
  • C0 (default): automatic mode — runs C1 to C4, keeps the most reliable result and tells you which mode worked best, so next time you can choose it directly. It is slower.
  • C1: best for labels, documents and standard images.
  • C2: recommended for complex images with mixed layouts.
  • C3: best for single-column text such as receipts or narrow labels.
  • C4: designed for sparse or scattered text.
If C1 does not give a good result, try the others — each applies a different internal configuration.
Can I rotate or crop the image before extracting the text?
Yes — once an image is loaded, an orientation wheel and a focus-area button appear next to it. Drag the wheel to match how tilted your text currently looks (not how you want it to end up): the tool then rotates the image the opposite way to straighten it. The focus button lets you draw a rectangle over just the text you need, ignoring the rest of the image. Both are especially useful for photos, which are rarely perfectly aligned, and noticeably improve extraction accuracy — particularly in Confidential mode, since it relies entirely on local OCR with no AI fallback to correct for a poor-quality image.
Is there a specific tool for detecting allergens and intolerances on labels?
Yes. Milcheaufsnutgluten (clipboardocr.com/milcheaufsnutgluten) is a free tool integrated in BC Clipboard OCR specifically designed to detect allergens and intolerances on product labels. It detects 19 groups — including the 14 mandatory under EU Regulation 1169/2011 — highlighting each in its own colour. It includes an allergen repository organised by category, where you can select which allergens the tool should look for. If the label's language differs from your configured reading language, it also shows the translation of each detected allergen. Supports photo, pasted image, EAN/UPC barcode and exports results via your messaging app, email or as a PNG image. Available in 6 languages.
Is there a tool specialised in distance, area, weight, volume or temperature conversions?
Yes. Clipboard OCR Konvorcet (clipboardocr.com/konvorcet) is a free tool integrated in BC Clipboard OCR specifically designed for converting distance, area, weight, volume and temperature values found in images. All categories use fixed factors based on NIST and BIPM standards. Choose between replacing the original value or adding the conversion in brackets next to it, or convert a single value directly without extracting anything from an image. It also includes a free any-to-any unit converter, a price-per-unit calculator, and a comparator for up to four products or measurements at once.
Is there a tool specialised in currency conversion?
Yes. Clipboard OCR Croesus Rates (clipboardocr.com/croesusrates) is a free tool integrated in BC Clipboard OCR specifically designed for converting currency values found in images. It uses the European Central Bank's daily reference rate. Choose between replacing the original value or adding the conversion in brackets next to it, or convert a single value directly without extracting anything from an image. It also includes a full exchange rate lookup table, an exchange rate difference calculator between two dates, and a historical rate export covering up to five years.
